For a while now, your Threads profile has basically been riding shotgun with Instagram — same access, same permissions, no separate say in who gets to advertise where. That's changing.

Starting soon, Threads is getting its own access settings. Here's what's shifting, when it's happening, and what you actually need to do about it (short answer: not much, yet).

The Big Picture

Threads is graduating from Instagram's understudy to having its own dressing room. Instead of inheriting whatever access rules apply to Instagram, it'll get a dedicated set of permissions all its own.

This isn't flipping on overnight — it's rolling out gradually over the next few months, so you've got time to get oriented before it affects anything you're running.

What's Actually Changing

Threads gets its own bouncer. Who's allowed to advertise with your Threads profile will be managed separately from Instagram. Everyone who currently has access keeps it — they'll just show up listed by name in Settings instead of inheriting access automatically.

No more copy-paste permissions. Add or remove someone's access on Instagram or your Facebook Page today, and it applies everywhere. Once this rolls out, that stops — you'll need to make the same change on your Threads profile separately.

Mix and match. Setting up an ad in Ads Manager currently requires your Threads username to match your Instagram. Soon you'll be able to pair any Threads profile with any Instagram profile, no matching required.

Rename without regret. Usernames change. Right now, changing a Threads username mid-campaign can be disruptive. After this update, you or a partner can update it freely and your ads will just keep running.

What You Need to Do Right Now

Nothing. Your Threads ads will keep running exactly as they do today, and no changes will be made to your access on your behalf. This is a heads-up, not a to-do list — yet.

What to Do Before It Fully Rolls Out

• Review who currently has access through Instagram or your Facebook Page, and note who should also have access to your Threads profile.
• Bookmark the Settings area where Threads access will live, so it's not a scramble later.
• Set a reminder to double-check permissions once the rollout hits your account — since changes won't carry over automatically anymore.
