We’ve all felt negative feelings in some way before. Feelings of self-doubt, fear, anger. It’s part of being human. But trying to suppress these emotions can take a toll on our mental energy which can in turn lead to bigger problems. It’s important to recognize these negative thoughts and emotions and understand the effects thy have, not just on ourselves, but on our relationships. I constantly have to remind myself of what I have and that there are plenty of positives to focus on. We all need to work on removing negative thoughts from our minds, especially with the world in the state it’s in.
The more we focus on negative feelings, the more stressed we will be. And prolonged stress can lead to bigger health problems. If we try to just suppress our negative feelings, we can face not only physical, but mental anguish.
Not addressing our negative thoughts and attitudes can have lasting consequences and reduce our quality of life. Does that sound enjoyable to anyone?
Having a positive attitude can broaden our perspective of the world. It also allows us to understand those around us a bit better and empathize with them more. For me, my relationships are improved, and each day looks a little brighter. Aside from the emotional improvement I notice that I’m able to relax better and sleep better.
Overcoming Negative Thoughts
So how do we remove negative thoughts and start to focus on the positive. Well, here are a few tips:
We all tend to prioritize the bad over the good. Perhaps it’s how we were raised or maybe it’s just how we’re wired. Each of us tend to spend too much time focusing on the minor problems such as bad traffic, a disagreement with a friend or loved one, or a stubbed toe. While these may bother us at the time, it’s important to look at the big picture. These minor inconveniences aren’t that bad and we’ll soon forget them. Even if we’re faced with bigger issues, we need to consciously try to remember all the good surrounding us. It may be hard, but it will be worth it.
If we spend all of our lives holding grudges, our mental and physical health will begin to suffer. Plus, no one wants to hang out with someone that doesn’t forgive others, am I right? Forgiving others offers us emotional freedom, as if a weight has been lifted from our bodies. No matter how big or small someone has wronged us, forgiving them will allow us to have a more positive perspective and move forward with our lives.
I’m not sure anyone can be truly happy if they are also not grateful. I believe there is a direct relationship between joy and gratitude. It’s important to recognize all that we have and all that surrounds us. It can be hard to see the something to be grateful for sometimes, but just start trying and you will surprise yourself how good it makes you feel.
I have a long way to go myself and negative thoughts are always trying to creep into my head. But the important thing is to keep trying. Each day is a new start and a chance to become better and more positive.
